Thomas Hodgskin served in the British Royal Navy from 1800-1812. He met James Mill and Jeremy Bentham and from 1817-1818 conducted a social study of Hanover, Germany. In 1823 Hodgskin became a Parliamentary reporter for the London Morning Chronicle. In the same year he also founded The Mechanic's Magazine, and later the London Workingmen's Institute.
